Juno Birch

Juno Birch, according to me, comes from the Sasha Velour school of theatrical drag. Equal parts make up wizardry and performance art, Juno Birch brings a fully-developed character to the supermarket next door.

Juno does not do a female illusion per se. The transformation is more like a Lisa Marie from 'Mars Attacks!' version of a housewife. With a perfect pink (or blue, or violet) complexion, her makeup is closer to a Funko vinyl figurines than that of a beauty queen. And I'm here for it.

I also think that Juno identifies as trans and the process of creating 'June' is part of her presenting herself to the world. That would add another layer to the intersectionality that her art provides. She is also a talented artist in other fields: she creates elaborate sculptures that somehow represent a femininity not unlike the one June offers in real-girl size.

I think that drag artists bring a very special flavor to performance art and I would like to feature here more drag artists that go above and beyond the already elaborate process of creating a persona out of make up and sheer talent. So I leave you with Juno and her art. And it's stunning.

XOXO

  2. Well.. the blue skin is a little unsettling.. lol. I totally get what you are saying, my favorite drag performance during pride week was a person that came out looking more like a female creature from a sci-fi movie than a drag queen. It wasn't just the costume, it was the performance as well, a complete entertainment package.
