Empanadas

If we're disclosing things here, I cannot cook to save my life. Or to be clearer, I do not possess the Martha Stewart gene that so many men seem to have from the cradle. I can whip up a salad and put together things to make a mean omelette, but COOKING, I don't do.

So when this video popped up in my feed, I was like, why not? And I was surprised to find one of the most fun, touching and entertaining cooking segments I've seen in a long time. Both Jade and Monica are Drag Race alumni and both have had successful careers after being in the series and both recognize how much their lives changed after being on TV. Both are Latinx (Boricuas, both of them) both are Chicago queens and both had memorable moments while in their respective seasons.

I believe Jade was in the first installment and Monica a few seasons later. Jade, she of the meaty tuck made Ru Paul said something about having too many motherfucking snakes in that plane, cracking up all the judges and us at home; and Monica had a very touching moment when she came out as (probably the first) trans performer during her season.

What's more important, the video touches into several topics that demonstrate how important intersectionality is (gender, gender expression, race, ethnicity and friendship) in ways you don't usually see in products put out by many queer creators. The girls and the hosts touch on themes like the girl's Latinx background, their lives after the show, their friendship and Monica's revelation that she'll have her name officially changed and will transition completely by the time the segment airs.

It's a joy to see them interact as their non-drag selves and with the hosts in full make up and costume and it's also illuminating getting to know who they are behind the persona. They both take pride in their being Latinx and that is obvious int he fantastic time they have talking about their families and how cooking Puerto Rican dishes was part of their upbringing.

Apart from making me hungry (I love me some empanadas!) I found the segment very touching and uplifting. The insight into Jade and Monica's friendship is a nice touch. One that makes these talented performers much more human and it gives us, the public, a view into the lives of the artists we see in our screens. We get word of the twitter feuds and the terrible behavior of some queens (I'm looking at you, Tyra Sanchez!) but seldom see the camaraderie and lasting friendships that the girls forge in and out of Drag Race.

So go ahead, good cook or not, Drag Race fan or not; take a look and be ready to laugh and get hungry. And if you can do a Piña Colada this delicious, don't forget to invite me.

XOXO

  3. Come to chez moi! You will never go hungry here. If you like Cuban food, you'll be right at home. We deep fry our salads even when my manservant Clive disapproves of all the grease. But, darling, I say, that's where the flavor is! And of course, we have empanadas, and croquetas, and pastelitos, and surullitos, and tamales, and tacos, and quesadillas. If it comes from the tropics or being held up at a detention camp in TX, it's on the menu!

    1. I did! I think my reticence in the kitchen is tied to my being insecure. I can cook following a recipe, but left alone I, a disaster!
