girls, girls, girls
When it comes to female pop stars, I guess I prefer the ones that have something to say. Because I obviously don't go for sex appeal or projection, I do pay attention to their statements and the messages they deliver. One of the few flying with my radar is Miley Cyrus. The Hanna Montana of yesteryear has grown up to be a complex, beautiful woman, with the music to back up her claims. Her life is tabloid fodder and she refuses to let go of her fierce individuality.
Take this video, for example. I had to watch it twice, so chockfull of images and messages that it will certainly have the people who want to see what she has to say looking for clues. For many, she's just another starlet, but I have grown more and more interested in her message. She's a feminist with a twist. She uses her body to her advantage, not as fodder for the Incels. She's opinionated with a point of view. She's daring and uses visuals to deliver a message.
Another artist who uses her talent for dance and her body to full advantage is FKA Twigs. She may have flown under your radar, but once you check her out (well, that too) and see what she has to say, you'll stop and think for a minute. She's English and American audiences may have not been ready for somebody like her: a beautiful performer with a clear penchant for provocation. An obviously trained dancer, she makes her body do things that I thought could only happen in Cirque du Soleil. Really. Her lyrics, like Cyrus's are reflective and deep. Sometimes cryptic but they are the perfect foundation for awesome visuals.
And I like that. I like artists that make me think, that make me stop and listen. They follow in the footsteps of Madonna (yeah, I know) and make a statement with their body and their visuals. Both are Millenial artists, coming of age in a time when technology and the work of many others have set the pace for their artistic expression. I like that kind of artist, the kind that make me gawk and rewind. I know, I'm posting a different kind of eye candy this time. Don't worry. There's always dick in my schedule. Meanwhile, enjoy the girls.
XOXO
P.S. Check these other videos, too:
Now,FKA Twigs I can see as an artiste, because she mostly keeps her private life private, which adds to the allure. And that Cellophane video? Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteMiley, on the other hand, feels a little like a poser to me, like what I call a 'try hard', doing whatever might be the new 'it' thing just for the attention.
I can't with her.
FKA Twigs is amazing. Really. A fully realized concept and cool vocals. Her videos are exceptional. I think she was dating Robert Pattinson of twilight fame. Have no idea if they’re still together.

I just can't with Miley. . She had one song I liked called 4x4...that was sort of dancy that I loved. Most times I feel I need a shower after seeing her.
ReplyDeleteThe post title reminds me of Ms. Garrett on the Facts of Life to quite the girls down. Girls.....girls......GIRLS!!!!!!
So there's that.
Haha I like Miley. I never watched Hanna Montana, so to me she’s just Miley Cyrus the singer. I like how irreverent and unapologetic she is.
DeleteOmg yes. Mrs. Garret!
XoXo
meh. I just don't do girl singers. except for dolly parton.
ReplyDeleteAnne Marie and Dolly have a lot in common Sixpense. Both intelligent women with huge jahoobies!!!!!!!
DeleteI totally adore Dolly. Let’s go to Dollywood!

I was sitting in a restaurant in Rome (I know, I know... but I NEVER get to say things like that), when I first saw Miley's Mother's Daughter vid. I was captured. Nothing else existed for a bit. The subject material and tackling so much of what the world fears about women and their biology, and those termed 'other'. I thought it brave and electrifying. I was disappointed when it didn't take over the world. That it wasn't celebrated more. Oh well, part of the evolution, right?
ReplyDeleteHahaha
DeleteYes, it's always awesome to start a conversation with that!
I like what Miley did with that video. From concept to message to art direction. You are right, women are feared because the men who love them don't know them. Isn't that ironic??
I was hoping the video would get more traction, but then again, people are prudes.
