Peppermint Pop Quiz

No, I did not steal this one from Upton, I promise! Even though he has the BEST quizzes, this one came to be because I was thinking about something holiday appropriate. Right off the mini-fest of Giving Thanks we immediately move into the juggernaut of all holiday: Xmas.

So let's see:

Favorite xmas dish or dessert?
Panettone. My mom used to bring it home when we were little (her dad apparently used to give her Panettone every xmas and she kept the tradition). I like them all! With chocolate, with caramelized fruit, anything! I have been known to eat a whole Panettone all by myself in one week. Yes, it's that bad.

My 'perfect' xmas celebration would include: some cookies, a xmas tree (natural, but a nice artificial one would do) and apple cider. Yep, I agree with Maddie on this one. Apple cider is my beverage of choice for xmas (and beyond). BTW, Bae used to bring me xmas cookies when we were seeing each other and I'd run through those puppies like a wildfire. The second day, I had to take them to work to share the chunk, because that's what people do during the holidays: they share the chunk.

What is my favorite thing about xmas?
The lights. I love that there's lights everywhere. You have seen my house, I practically live a xmas-lite experience year-round because of the fairy lights I have everywhere. I love the lights and the candles and the fireplaces, even though I think they are too much when they're gas. I prefer wood-burning fireplaces because gas fireplaces make me paranoid. Also, I've discovered I like staying home. Getting to stay home has become a thing these last years. Especially if it's snowing. I know. Lame. But I actually like being home for xmas and just chill.... and open gifts, of course. I like the gifts too.

Overall, I am not very Xmas-y, as you may have guessed. I don't have Maddie's talent, for example, to transform anything and everything into a holiday-appropriate centerpiece and I don't have the patience (or space) to store all the accoutrements that come with such holiday dècor. But I go along with the celebration. And what I noticed this year is that we're getting some Ho-Ho-Holiday appropriate (read LGBTQ- inclusive) TV movies because the pandemic fucked up plans to see anything in theaters (and producers have discovered the gays flock to watch anything, well, gay) and everything will be streamed, natch. And that may be a good thing.

And the first one came packaged by the most unexpected source: Hallmark. Yep, the Hallmark channel has gone inclusive. After adding some POC to their lily-white estable (I know, progress!), now they've included The Gays. So if you're in the mood for xmas stuff and you don't get dizzy with all the dazzling blandness of the Hallmark Channel, keep an eye out for The Christmas House, their first LGBTQ inclusive xmas movie EVER. It's a milestone, people.

The movie is your run-of-the-mill Hallmark experience (lots of sweaters, lots of Better Homes and Gardens dècor and slightly bland but pretty people doing xmas-y things) but the difference is that this time there's a gay couple in the mix. Not the main event, mind you (that's going to be the straight older brother, fresh from the big bad city and back to rekindle a small-town teen romance) but even better (IMHO), they're just added to the mix of the familiar love stories the Hallmark channel usually offers. The better for Middle America to enjoy, I guess. One Million Moms is gonna throw a fit. Again.

The cherry on top (or the mistletoe in the doorway, whatever you prefer) is that the two actors who play the gay couple actually get to kiss in the movie. Oh, honey, if you don't know WHY this is a big deal, you've NEVER watched the Hallmark Channel. There's nothing more bland and homogeneous and Middle America than the Hallmark Channel. Nothing. Even the Tamales they get to eat in this movie one day seem somehow... tidier?

So do as I did and make sure you have a free hour one of these days and let your remote do the search. It's there, in the basic cable lineup. The Christmas House. Go ahead. Yo know you want some schmaltz for the holidays. With some gay thrown in for good measure. Happy viewing!

XOXO

P.S. The straight brother is quite delectable, too.

  1. I'm not a Christmas kind of guy. Nope. I actually abhor the holidays, from Turkey Day on through New Year's Eve. It simply deepens my Seasonal Disorder. But, yes, the trees (we actually have 3) go up, along with other decorations. Every room gets something. The cookie baking goes on. Christmas music is not allowed until a few days before because, my gawd! who can listen to 100 artists sing the same songs over and over again. The Hallmark channel gets surfed (oy vey!!!). It's difficult to stomach the same old story line hour after hour. Hey! Maybe the new inclusiveness can add a few twists here and there. How about "A Bathhouse Christmas"? I'd watch that!! XOXO

And I don't do the decorating. I think the farthest I've gone is getting some holiday greenery. And I'm with Jimmy. I'd watch A Bathhouse Xmas for sure!

  2. We decorate for Christmas, we buy gifts, we have a nice dinner, but we aren't big on the holiday. It's become too much, so we keep it simple and just us and the pets.
    It's quiet and peace-filled.
But I will be watching my gays on Hallmark!

    1. Oh I just saw your pics. Love it. It's just the right amount of holiday cheer, IMHO.
Quiet and peace filled is just right. And yes for the gays on Hallmark!

There are several varieties, and I like them all. People sometimes go for the chocolate pieces one, but I love the caramelized fruit one!

  6. I think the reason I think the holiday is because it makes life fun, and breaks up the 365 days into something different. Holidays are about decorating, and spending time with family and friends, having drinks and food, and thinking about on passed loved ones. And you dear, don't need to decorate a lot. Have you thought of doing just live pine and or bayberries in vases or a pine garland around a doorway? With your lights already, just add a bowl or two filled with balls. You'd be amazed how much this help and adds a simple touch, and the greens can stay up into winter. Though Id rather see your balls hanging!!!!!!!

I caught that movie at my mother's house. She had it on. That gay couple was adorable! I also saw a preview for another upcoming one with the gay couple as the lead and Fran Deshler is playing the mother. I can't remember the date now. Your right small steps......

    1. I think I'm going to try the live pine and bayberries. I love the touch of ted they offer. Two years ago I had an accidental xmas tree because a pine tree branch broke outside my window and I put it in a huge vase. I liked it the effect.
And you see, moms always watch the Hallmark channel. It's their go-to during the holidays. I bet more than one mom watched this movie and was like 'that's cool'.
That other movie I think it's Lifetime!! Oh, not I'll have to schedule that one too in somebody's Tivo.
And balls hanging is always festive!!
      LOL

  7. ps...do you still keep the panettone tradition going by getting one? I love it too. I haven't had it in years. My favorite mxas dinner is Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding. And of course cookies. And then there's my eggnog recipe....

    1. Ohh I love roas tbeef. It takes me forever to digest but I love the flavor. And Eggnog! Yes, !

    2. Six - you cannot have a Roast Beef without Yorkshire Pudding. You can't. It's a major, major sin!!!! It'll help you digest the beef (I just made that up, but what the hell; what have you got to lose by trying it?). XOXO

I'm gonna try it if I can. It sounds delicious, though.

  8. Ohhhh now I want to try a Panettone. I have seen them. My parents always opted for pies (pecan, apple, cheesecakes). I love Christmas cookies. Some of my circles had cookie swaps--those were the best. Christmas lights--yes!! Columbus has the Wild Lights at the Zoo. Amazing!
My favorite Christmas tradition? Well it has to be at midnight mass, when the all the lights go out and we light each others candles singing "Silent Night"...brings me to tears each time.

    1. OMG!!!!! JM when I was little and until I moved out, I went to church for midnight mass with my parents, and we did the same thing. It was always so magical. then while singing Joy to the World, pew by pew everyone would exit the church with their lit candles. One had to know where to sit, because otherwise you'd hear joy to the world 29 times. Then after wards we drove around and looked at xmas lights.

    2. You do have to try Panettone. It's so delish!
And the Zoo here has lights too! I may do that. Same about the Midnight Mass. Catholics, you know.
Singing at churches always gets me emotional..

  9. I see that 'straight' brother and I just wanna smack the Panettone out of him. SMACK. Hallmark. Sigh. The preview plays like a parody. And of course they have gays in this one... who else is going to remodel/decorate correctly? Sorry... to white-bread for me. All that over-lit privilege. Oh.. Panettone - the boyfriend has Cocoa Peru as his ring tone threatening to withhold the Panettone unless he answers... love it. I think I might surprise him with one this year. We tried it one year and he wasn't a fan. Me? I will eat almost anything (just ask the boys at the prairie). I'm with you on the cutesie xmas stuff. Can't. Lack of interest, lack of skill. I like my little gas fire place. It's very pretty at night, and yes, I know I'm only fooling myself, but those logs look inviting and in the spirit. I don't really do sweets for xmas. Not a cookie kind of person. I will eat one. To be polite, but no. And I can't do all the sugar that one gets with cider, though I do like the smell. Herbal tea for me, please. Hope you are snug and loved this holiday season. It is a great time of year. A big distraction before that horrible winter mess descends and ruins everything for three months. Sigh. Happy, happy.

Oh, the 'straight' brother is yummy. He was in iZombie and I loved it every time he was shirtless. Yum.
And that ringtone sounds like a blast! Too funny. You may want to get him a different kind this year (there's fruit, chocolate, hazelnut, the works!) and pair it with some liquor, as Italians do.
I am not against gas fireplaces (the visuals are soooo comforting!) but I swear I can always smell the gas. Even if nobody else can. It makes me paranoid. And you are right. Those three months go on FOREVER.

  10. And you know, there was a time when Treat Williams (who plays the father) would have been the dishy treat in ANY movie! Oh well, we all get older and pudgier.

Treat is in Hair, one of my fav musicals.

  11. I saw the movie. Though it was pretty cookie cutter fare, it was good to see the gay couple. And big bro is pretty hot.

I’ll be decorating this year, since I couldn’t last year due to eye surgery. And I’m kind of looking forward to it. I’ve got my advent calendar and look forward to the little chocolate every day.

And next week is vacation. Already trying to figure out how the family will meet so I can get rid of all those damn cookies abs date ‘n nut bread so I don’t become as big as a house!
