Jess and Ness

I guess it's a tiny house day, today. I have not posted one of these in awhile, but what called my attention was not only the cute little house, but the fact that it's two girls who are featured in the video. It's very seldom that we see two women together in this kind of program. It's always the two dudes or a hetero couple the ones who show off their abode (tiny or not). This is the first time I've seen a lesbian couple featured. And trust me, I watch a ton of HGTV and house tours on youtube. Progress!

It's refreshing, to see that Ness and Jess are featured in this youtube channel. The tiny house phenomenon does not seem to abate though, and I think it's a good way for some couples (who are handy and really love each other) to have their starter home or to let go of a house that's too big after the kids have left. I think I'm more of a Container Home kind of guy, but I can see the charm and attraction of a tiny home.

I think it does take a special kind of relationship to withstand the pressures of building a house (tiny or not) together and I applaud all these couples who go into it together. Just putting together an Ikea bed requires patience. I think Ness and Jess did a fantastic job with this tiny home, though. It's incredible what they managed to pack in such a small space! Living minimally in a tiny house (that has been maximized here very nicely) with a tiny dog should take some accommodating. But the openness of the space does help a lot.

I loved the upcycling of the things that they reused for the house and the mezzanine and the climbing wall! Not for everybody, but it works in this case. It think that they did a great job, even though they did not have building experience! And it seems it was a good investment, on top of that. All in all, I was impressed.

Would I like to live in a house this small? Maybe if I lived alone, I would like to think I could learn to like it. I really want to learn to let go of a lot of stuff and Marie-Kondo my whole life. I'm not in Nomadland territory, but I'd love the freedom of not 'needing' much.

XOXO

  1. Building a house, buying a house, renovating a house, are all huge pressures on a couple.

    1. But they are also steps that help build the couple itself!

    2. True.
And I think that any of those situations could be a barometer for the relationship. The amount of negotiation, communication and plain maturity needed to carry out any of those endeavors would test anybody.

  2. I have big dogs. The idea of a small house doesn't even pass through my consciousness.

I don't have pets. Don't need them. But I have too many things. I'd have to donate half of what I have in order to move into a tiny home.

  3. Pretty good job they did. I could live in a tiny house on 2 conditions. 1. I'd have to be living alone. 2. It would have to have a large outdoor space. Whatever building that is next to them, so close, would make me a little nuts. 'Course, the M.D. would force me to forego an upper level. I love the idea of a container house --- on a nice secluded beach. I've seen some really cool ones featured on HGTV. XOXO

    1. I thought the same, too!
And I agree with you. A tiny home is for one person and it needs to have space outside to do some inside-outside living during the warm months (or live in Australia or New Zealand, natch). And I understand the idea of accessibility would be super important.
I like container houses. In a beach? sign me up!

  4. I would only be able to live in a Tiny Home by myself. And maybe a cat.

Same! It's a little too small for two people. And a cat sound just right. Or maybe a small dog. A very small dog.

  5. Wonderful concept for maybe a shaolin monk, and since it is up on wheels it is not for Florida with hurricanes. That said, I live in a tiny house (980sf). My kitchen can barely fit two people at the same time. We share the small bathroom with the cat (Phil). It is also not ideal for people who are collectors or hoarders.

A Shaolin monk, huh? And I think tiny houses do need to be in a place where the weather is not radical. And your house could indeed be considered a tiny house! And I'm sure Phil gives you the eye when you intrude.
Having a small place always makes us reconsider our priorities.

  6. I adore the concept and hope it continues to catch on, along with smaller cars/electric cars. It simply makes sense. Nobody needs a f'ing McMansion. They are terrible house, horribly designed, made with shite materials. I think this is amazing (and yes, how sweet that we get two lesbians with this one). Thanks for bringing this to the fore. I would do this in a heartbeat. In fact, I rather plan on retiring to a small community and living exactly like this, although I do want more of a say on windows and the exterior materials. This is actually quite a large tiny house. Kizzes.

    1. Absolutely.
Having a small carbon footprint should be our goal. I live in the suburbs and I cannot believe the amount of space some of the houses take. They look like fucking B&B! Having a living room, a sitting room, a formal dining room, a breakfast nook, a family room, a den, a game room and a wet bar (along with a four car garage) is something that's a little excessive, me thinks.
And the idea of retiring to a tiny home sounds totally plausible.

      Yes! Let the glamping begin!
To tell you the truth, I've daydreamed of living in a restored Airstream.

    2. Don't GET ME stared on an Airstream!!!!!! Had I not been laid off I would have considered getting a Bambi Airstream this summer. I adore them. Last season a guy was kind enough to let he see his at the Woods and I was in love. I follow a guy on Instagram who bought one and is restoring it. It's amazing. And he is adorable too.

I would get a Bami if I didn't need an SUV to drag it. Well, also if they were a little less expensive. And are you following Kyle Krieger??? MADDIE!!!
