Behind-the-Scenes

When I heard the news on Sunday that Virgil Abloh had passed away at 41, I could not believe it. Cancer. So sad. So young! Such a bright mind. I've always admired him, not only for his clothes, but for his ideas in general and his approach to design. If you go back the post of my basement garden apartment, you'll see that I literally have a little wall full of his stuff. When he showed at the Museum of Contemporary Art here in Chicago, I was thrilled. I fought the masses to go see it and bought some mementos. Now I'm sorry I did not buy an overpriced T-shirt he designed that I loved.

I love his approach to presenting fashion. His shows were always full of images and symbolism. He knew that it's the street what dictates what the runways will show and that showed in his collections. He knew how to engineer a garment, too. Brilliant mind. He'll be missed:

“The idea of modernity speaks to my beliefs about inclusivity and being open-minded and respectful to people from all walks of life. That is at the heart of what I am pursuing in my own work. In this position, at this brand, there is a responsibility to represent what society could be.”

  1. So young and such a short life -- however, one of accomplishment alright.

    1. Absolutely.
In that video he looks so... vital?
But the only thing we need to die is to be alive, right?
      And he did SO much!

  3. When someone is taken so young, you always have to wonder what they would have accomplished, given more time. He seems to have made the best of his talent, but I think the fashion industry will miss him, greatly.

  4. Short life at 42, but I hope it was fullfilling for him. "Only the good die young." I must've been pretty bad. XOXO

I think he did live intensely. I didn't even know he was married and had children. Hope his legacy continues inspiring people.
      Death. So completely random.

  5. I will admit...I wasn't very famaliar with his art or fashion much...but to have a talent or three... and then have life cut so short....fucking sucks.

    1. He was so talented!
He did not train as a fashion designer. He was more of an architect who fell into fashion. He was the first African American to lead a fashion house.
      Such a loss.

Adore that last quote. Such a tragic loss. And so young. I dunno. Doesn't it make you just want to chuck everything, throw caution to the wind and deep dive into some exotic pet project? I mean - life! Spend it. Use it up. Tear it up. Sorry you didn't get that f'ing t-shirt. :(

I'd recognize your style anywhere, Upton.
And it does make you just jump into your plans and DO SOMETHING. LIfe is so fleeting.
I am indeed sorry I never got that T-shirt. One only lives once, right?
