Malfunction

One Oscar nomination
First woman nominated for Producer of the Year Grammy
27 top 10 hits
Record for most consecutive top ten hits on Billboard by a female artist
First and only artist in history to have seven top five hits from one album.

All of that suddenly went away after the 2004 Superbowl Halftime show. The phrase 'Wardrobe Malfunction' became a punchline and Janet Jackson was ostracized from the music business. Yes, that's right: 1/16th of a fucking second caused America to turn its back on one very talented woman. All America is... America.

And of course it was not just the nipple shield that Justin Timberlake (barf) let out what caused such terrible backlash: it was the blatant racism and misogyny that was unleashed upn Janet after the incident what caused the interruption in a brilliant career. And that 'malfunction' was not Janet's words: it was Timberlake's. That weasel kissed ass and groveled and threw Janet under the bus in order to have a career (sounds familiar, right, Britney?). A career that he may have not had if Janet wouldn't have plucked Insync from obscurity and put it under her spotlight when she chose them to open for her during her heyday.

Timberlake is a dick, but he was also used by the Religulous Wrong and the Rethuglyclowns of the time to take control of the airwaves, because they thought the were losing their grip on what people could see. I don't know if you remember, but back in 2004 MTV reigned supreme in what concerned music. Janet's songs would get forty plays a day on MTV alone. She was huge. But she did not show the contrition that white America was demanding of her. And her career suffered because of it.

So then the powers that be (Old White Cisgender Straight Men) came down on her. They could not forgive her for being an assertive, powerful, sexy Black woman. They could not forgive her for rebelling against the rule white men have created that Black women can only be sexy under THEIR vigilant eye and for their pleasure. Janet was blamed, shamed and blacklisted out of a fantastic career. Instrumental was Les Moonves (who was kicked out of CBS after allegations of sexual assault, natch) and people in VIACOM and the NFL, even when they deny it. And they do, to this day.

I watched the documentary by the New York times and I can say that today I abhor Justin Timberlake a little bit more than I abhorred him last week. He benefited from the privilege of being male and white and half- apologized to everybody (except Janet ) to get an award and then to go back and perform at the Super Bowl again. The documentary does present some Black people's perspective, but I think it's more telling on how the white people involved actually point at their own blame for what happened while trying to squirm away from any responsibility.

If you have Hulu (or cable, it's on FX) you can watch it, or wait for what I think will be superior: the Lifetime documentary (it will air both on Lifetime *television for women* and on A&E *for the masc4masc crowd*) and it's JANET'S tale. I want to watch that one now. I want a documentary that allows Janet to have autonomy over her own story (Malfunction kinds of wags its finger over the sexist, racist assholes who blacklisted her and that's about it). So I'll wait until January 2022 for her side of the story.

So I'll leave you with that. I'd recommend the New York Times documentary, if you really want a refresher and another perspective on the 2004 debacle, or if you're not familiar with it. But I'm going to wait for the 2022 Janet documentary to make any comments. At the end of the day, I'll always be on Janet's side. No matter what happened with that 'wardrobe'.

Also, fuck pencil dick Justin Timberlake. He's a spineless cunt.

XOXO

  1. Always thought there was a huge double standard at play re: this incident. Justin was just doing business... trying to escape the wrath. Could have he done more? Hell, yes. But I'm sure his advisors told him not to because it would affect sales and blah, blah money. It was painful to watch and listen to. And Janet? Considering all that was going on with Michael and the family, I think she'd just had enough of it and shut down. That no one came to her aid. That no one stepped up? Even black entertainers were silent. And women, too. Like she got what she 'deserved?' I will never understand it. And that it has taken all this time to take it up and examine it? Very telling. Thanks for this. I adore Ms. Jackson. Kizzes.

    1. Oh, there totally was.
Justin bowed down and weaseled out of the controversy because he was promoting Justified. I agree that Janet just shut down. They wanted her to humiliate herself even more and she didn't do it. She was left alone and I hope she lets them have it in her documentary.
      Fuckers.
      I also adore Miss Jackson.

  3. Happened or not....I still don't get all the hub bub. Had anyone not seen a tiity before???? Madonna went and did far more each racey stuff...and while they blinked an eye....she went on years after. Oh...except she is white too. I felt sorry for Janet too...especially since she was the only Jackson who appears normal.

    1. Oh, she stepped right into a storm.
The culture wars we're seeing now started a long time ago. And she is a Black woman. And proud of her sexuality. They did not forgive that. She created a precedent, though. Of women owning their sexuality in public and now we have many more female performers talking about it and being themselves on stage.
Ugh of course that little shit got away with it cause he's white.

  4. I could stand being blacklisted. As long as I had all her money.

    1. I'm sure her money allowed her some freedom, but it's twenty years without a good artistic outlet. They stifled her creativity.
      I think it's unforgivable.

  7. There's a huge double-standard at play. Not just with the race but with the gender. Upton may be right. She may have shut down for a while ,and who could blame her? But that doesn't excuse others not coming to her defense. It was the nipple shield that convinced the old white men there was no "malfunction," that it was planned. 'Cuase, otherwise, why would she have been wearing that thing? It will be interesting to see/hear her story next year. XOXO

    1. Absolutely.
Gender and race were up and front in the whole controversy. I get that she shut down, the humiliation was probably unbearable and being left alone while they piled the blame on her should have been crushing. Add to that that they literally ended her career and there you have it: they found their scapegoat.
I really want to see what she has to say. Hope it's juicy. She probably has receipts.

  8. The word 'malfunction' is bad. The incident was planned because both Timberlake and Jackson thought they could get away with it. When they realized America was pissed, it became every man for himself. It was her nipple, so she got the brunt of it. Neither career fully rebounded. Could more people have stood up for her? Sure. Unfortunately, they played with fire in a very public venue and got burned.

    1. Malfunction is the word Timberlake used for his half-assed apology.
And I'm sure there was a stunt. That's for sure. But as Big say, it was the Old White Men the ones that were pissed off because they had been stirring the pot of fake outrage right before the Superbowl about the godless, sexual ways of the MTV generation. They found the perfect escapegoat. Justin went on to win a Grammy that year, sell Justified several times platinum, go back to perform at the Superbowl and be in records and movies until recently. All because he was a coward.
      Fuck him.

  9. I’ve seen the show on Hulu. Justin comes off as a scumbag low life for his half assed apology. The system sucked then and it still sucks today. Janet got shafted big time.

    1. Oh, that pencil dick weasel will have it coming. I hope Miss Jackson drags him. And that when she's done, Britney goes on the record talking about how much of a shitstain he is.
The system has always been stacked against women. Especially Black women.
I hope Janet has the last word. And the last laugh.

  10. The whole thing blew my mind and confused me. Many must have forgotten when Lil Kim showed up to the AMA with a whole titty exposed with exception to a pasty on the nipple.

    1. Oh, you know they were stewing in their bigotry ever since Lil Kim did that.
They seized on the whole 'think of the children' thing with the Superbowl performance.
      Ugh.
      Hypocrites.
