Chingona

Yari Mejia is a very well know Mexican make up artist and she is also one of the judges in the popular #LaMasDraga contest, a YouTube Mexican Drag contest that follows in the steps of Drag Race and showcases Mexican Drag artists and their talents. That contest, though, is quite different to Drag Race in flavour and tone and it's thoroughly Mexican and unequivocally Latin when it touches on culture, ethnicity and gender.  Topics that Drag Race seldom touches. It's a fascinating and fun viewing. A winning combo. And then it just happened that I was reading Maddie's post on PixiePixie, a Mexican Drag artist, and I remembered how much fun this video was, so here it is.

Yari is an ally and she's always showcased the Queens from LaMasDraga in her videos. Here you can see a showcase of the latest batch of Mexican Drag talent that came out of the contest and check out a true smorgasboard of sound and color and artistry. I am absolutely in love with the theme of the song, of course. It's empowering and fun and catchy as all hell. The song's actual name, Mexa, most would probably associate with Mexico (which itself has a fascinating story!), but in reality it has been reclaimed from something that could be considered a backhanded compliment (it means something like average Mexican, somebody from the working or 'new' middle class in Mexico) and it reflects the themes and topics we see in the contest. In LaMasDraga, the contestants vie for the title of 'La Más...' (which means 'the most..') an expression that is used when someone is living their best life and does not care about what anybody thinks. They are La más Frida Kahlo, or La más Chicana, or La más whatever Mexican aspect they want to underscore that week. It's fascinating and I've learned a ton of things about the country through the program. Who said Drag was not educational?

Funny story: once somebody told me I was Chingón and I had to ask siri about it. I am not well versed in Mexican slang, mind you. But now that I know what it means, I even have a t-shirt that has that word on the front and I have gotten laughs and high-fives in supermarkets and restaurants and on the train because of it. Maybe I AM Chingón after all. So I thought I would take a break from the bleak news we're getting and give us the chance to dance a little bit. A huevo!

XOXO

P.S. this post is dedicated to Carlos, Bob's better half, who I suspect, could probably explain much better the themes and iconography in the video. So Bob, the ball is on your court now, make it HAPPEN!
LOL

I am fascinated by the colors, the words and the images.
Even what they were is full of the culture. The referents are all over the place.

It actually says : Chingón All Star and it's a logo similar to the one I have in my Chucks. It's made in red, white and blue so it's even more political.

Oh, J. You're so sweet. I find it fascinating how people sometimes wear stuff on their t-shirts and they have no idea what it means. I understand that some similar words have very different meanings. I think I may need a Mexican boyfriend....

  5. You are SO Chingon! my dear. Thanks for sharing this. Made me wish I was still doing Zumba. We would have danced the hell outta this one. I love that the world is becoming so much more culturally aware. I can't believe the US has spent so many years in isolation... that's the power of the internet! Everything is everywhere! GAY-men to that, say I. Kizzes.

And I thought it was so energetic and kinetic that I had to show it here. The world IS becoming more culturally aware. You know that many people in the US are terrified of that. But the internet does help, sometimes.
      Gay-men!

  9. Okay, so there are 2 definitions one is awesome, the other is intimating, according to Google. So, are you intimidating because you're awesome, or awesome because you're intimidating?

  10. I still have yet to see a whole season of LaMasDraga, but I have always liked what I see. I think it's because the queens remind me of the style of drag that was popular when I started drag. And i love me some Paper Cut.

    1. Oh, Maddie.
They are so much fun! I think the best are the Finale episode. They all come out and it's a fun rump. The costumes are incredible, it feels like Rio.
I love their Drag. It's theatrical and very pretty at the same time.
Paper Cut is soooo talented! I thought it was going to be top four.

      XOXO
