My boogie shoes

You know that when a trailer starts that perky, ominous things lay ahead. So I am going to see this movie tomorrow. We have this Tuesday Night Club thing going on and I'm convincing everybody that this is THE movie to see. I like M. Night. With his bombastic style and surprise twists (Old, Signs) he always keeps me wondering and to tell you the truth, at the edge of my fucking seat even though his movies are not always box office successes. Oh, yes, I remember The Happening.

The idea of two dads being the main characters in a blockbuster movie is kind of an incentive to go, to tell you the truth. After watching that episode of The Rest of Us, I'm ready for this. And it adds to the excitement that this time it's not a Shyamalan original script, it's based on the novel by @paultremblay, which is a meditation on grief and responsibility and our place in the world. Does it sound good?

The fact that the parents are two men I'm sure it's going to send many bigots in a tizzy, but who the fuck cares? Not me. It's 2023, not 1953. I'm more than ready to bring the popcorn and see how the whole thing develops. Not to mention that I love the leads and I have the hots for @davebautista (besides, one of the Harry Potter kids shows up!).

So do you wanna go see the movie now? I won't write a review because it would have spoilers and I would never do that to you, Constant Reader. Don't you know me by now??

Happy viewing!

XOXO

P.S.: In case you don't wanna go to a movie theater, try the book: I got it last year, because @stephenking mentioned it by passing and I was super intrigued. It did not disappoint. Now comes the hard part: seeing someone version's of the book in a movie theater. Always a tough call.

I also listened to the @thekingcast where the author discusses the book. Fascinating.

  1. I read A Head Full Of Ghosts and liked it very much. I hope you enjoy the movie and a Tuesday Night Movie Club! How cool - that you have friends to do that with! And what a cool idea. Wish I lived in Chicago. I would want an invite. Looking forward to your review. I will suggest this to The Boyfriend, but he steers clear of Shyamalan's work. (And he's stubborn.) So, I may be on my own. This weekend we watched M3GAN. He loved it, I thought it was awful - dialogue was terrible - when it wasn't psychobabble, it was tech talk or corporate B.S. and when it wasn't either it was a tampon commercial. The movie feels taped together and the lead is so unlikable. But there will be a sequel (already being made) and a franchise, I am sure. I can't wait until the go full camp with it. Have fun, doll. Kizzes.

    1. OMG what? I need to read that, too.
And the TNMC was born out of the need to leave the house after the pandemic. My gurlz got one of those apps that give you free popcorn and $5 movies and the club was born.
And I know people who are weary of M.Night's movies. I like them. And I liked M3GAN! I was cackling at times and scared at others. AI is terrifying. And yes, if you lived in Chi, of course you'd get an invite to the TNMC!

  2. You have to let go of what you read and take the movie for what it's worth. The plot does sound intriguing but, yes, The Happening. M sometimes misses the mark.
    Enjoy and let us know!

    1. I am preparing myself for that.
I know that Shyamalan can get twisty, so I know he tweaked something. And The Happening had so much potential! But Marky Mark can give so much, right?

  3. I'm not wild about M. Night, perhaps because of those twists that, for me, don't work. He's from the Philly area, so many of his films are shot at PA locations, which is nice for the state. It did well at the box office this past weekend, of course 80 for Brady did almost as good. Hope you thoroughly enjoy it.

    1. Yeah, his twists at times can feel contrived but I enjoy them. It makes me look for the holes in the logic of the narrative. And I didn't know he was from Philly! And 80 for Brady has a captive audience. Or two. KITC has two gay dads, so....

  5. I have seen every M. Night movie there has been. I love his movies. A fun fact. He has a home right up the road from where my apartment was in Bucks County. I had seen him out numerous times on the town and a good friend of mine was friends with him, but I never met him. He said he is a very chill guy. I do know he was very drawn to Bucks County and New Hope, being from Philly. He even filmed three of his movies there.

I always go see them. And Dave just mentioned he lives in/near Philly. I'd love to pick his brain, TBH. He's very imaginative. And he also makes his Hitchcock style cameos!!

    HuntleyBiGuy:
This looks like it would be right up my alley. I do like some of M. Knight’s work. Always like a good suspenseful flick. (Do they still say flick?)

I should have read the book AFTER the movie, probably.

    Big says,
I like M. Knight's work for the most part. This one, because of the Two Dads will have the evilgelicals in a real tizzy - just like last week's episode of The Last of Us. All the more reason for the rest of us to make it a HUGE success.
Yeah, seeing a film after reading the book can sometimes be...disappointing. We just need to remember that they are two different mediums. XOXO

  10. LOVE M Night Shyamalan films. Unlike others, I did enjoy The Happening. What an interesting premise for a film. It had me on edge, and couldn't imagine that actually happening. I liked The Mist too, and always get the film confused as a M Night film even thought it was King.

And I think the premise of The Happening was great. It was a great commentary of what we do to nature. But it felt so... stiff? And not in the good way. Oh, The Mist is fantastic and it has Thomas Jane, so... yes.
