Oh, Montauk

One of the things that usually surprises me, if how fast I need to make a space 'mine', especially when going to live with someone or when sharing a place with someone. I swear it usually takes me like a week, but by the end of the week, you'd look at the space and say: sixpence lives here.

Now, this house is kind very nice. Not only because of the location, but because even though it is basically an 80's house, it does not scream 'excess' as so many houses of that era are wont to do. I know some would frown at the color palette, but really. I just love how it sets off the artwork and their idea of décor. There's not children or pets to get on the way and I think it makes the pieces of art they have and their furniture stand out without being overwhelmed. It also allows the house to breathe and let the focal point of the house -the sea- be the protagonist.

I think it's fascinating when two people join their design ideas and something like this pops up. After all, it's a beach house (I'd live here year round if I could, but that's just me) and I really like that it's not all blue shipwreck decor and seahorses but that it looks grown up and sophisticated. Had they gone the 'maritime' way I would have had a heart attack.

XOXO

  1. Big says,
OMG. This is gorgeous. Everything. The almost monochromatic makes it stunning, it allows the outside and the artwork make the statement. The only thing I would not want would be the mirror backing on the step risers. Trying to keep those clean and scratchproof would be a chore in itself. Otherwise...sign me up! XOXO

    1. That's what I thought, too.
The house is surrounded by beauty and they brought their own touches inside. What else is there to ask? It's peaceful but very sophisticated and personal? Does that make sense?
LOL I have no idea what the mirrors in the step risers mean. An 80's throwback??

  2. I like the location, but all of that damn white! That house is devoid of any personality what so ever.

    1. And I have to respectfully disagree. For a main house it would be nice to have the rich or bright tones of color...but when I go to a beach locale, I just love a all-white or different tones of whites' beiges or cremes to purposely keep a peaceful and tranquil environ. It just pops the glorious, lush greens views.

    2. Same.
I love white and neutrals in a beach house. And the personality is in the artwork and furniture, which stand out in a backdrop that does not steal from them. And then there's the views... The windows are floor to ceiling...

    HuntleyBiGuy:
I love this house, even though it’s mostly white. It says “grownups live here.” I think the palate, along with the views of the ocean could change the way the house looks from day to day, like the pool taking on the color of the ocean. I would have loved to see what the kitchen looks like.

I also have a problem with the mirrored stairs, I’d probably crack a few I’d them.

Don't give him ideas! As if he needed them... LOL
And I get that same feeling: it's a grown up house. Maybe the kids are gone to college. Maybe there were never kids. I love the art they showcase and the eclectic nature of the furniture, in those moody dark woods. And they did not show some parts of the house. It's in Architectural Digest, though...

  4. I need to live in a space that feels like "me" too, even if it's just a room or a certain part of the house.

    1. Absolutely.
Every time I've lived with someone is the first thing I do: carve my own space. I think it's self-care.

  5. I was sold as soon as i saw the exterior and the property. It needs some color, and a few less mirrors, especially those on the stair risers, but it's stunning.

And that dark color in the middle of all that green/blue? Yes. And I also noticed the mirrors on the stair risers?? I have never seen anything like that. Floating stairs? Yes. Mirrors? Never.

  6. I could live there year round as well but I would have to have some pets. A home for me isn't complete unless I have those furballs with me.

Of course you would. And it's a beautiful house. You'd have to pet-proof it, but the dogs would go crazy at the beach.

  7. Call me strange, but I love all whites, neutrals, or beiges....it screams clean, chic, and sleek, not to be mention can, at a whim, without paint and all the other nonsense, change the look of a room by just changing the color of pillows and accessories. Houses with this color palette I call a "Catherine Trammel" House. As in Basic Instinct. Sharon's character reeked of taste with that all white and beiges color palette.

On a sidenote, the character is one I see myself in a lot.

I like it because here it's serene and chic (it's a beach house!) and just add some accessories and voilà! Totally different mood.
OMG now I will call this mood the Catherine Trammel Mood!

  8. What a nice couple. And such an interesting house. Too much stuff, but lovely. It felt a bit claustrophobic. Which is odd, because of all the white tones. I like their story... coming together and transforming a place that speaks to both of them. Kizzes.

And I don't think they have too much? I think they have interesting stuff, though. I bet all those art pieces are actually ART. Transforming a space à deux when it comes to designers does not seem to be an easy job, and they pull it off.
