Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

I am officially stoked.

I read this book last summer. I actually read this book and its sequel, Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World in two very hot weeks last summer. And I loved them. Not only because they are set in the eighties (my fav decade, natch) but because they offered fleshed out characters and a worldview that even though it doesn't exist anymore, it can become real again if the Repugs take over the government.

Add to that the idea of uprooting yourself (I've done it several times) and of finding love in a heartless place (thanks, Rihanna) while living a life that was designed for you (and rebelling against it) and you have one of my fav cocktails. Even as inebriating as one of Mads' Gin concoctions.

It's a book that is not only about the gay experience, or the misfit experience, or the immigrant experience. It's a book about that and much more. @benjaminaliresaenz is proof that you can be very versatile in your writing and still be awesome at it.

I'm currently mulling what merch I'm gonna get from his website. If I get something cool, I'll let you know. Meanwhile, I'm prepping myself for this movie. August is gonna be LIT!

XOXO

This looks like a very promising movie. I searched Hoopla to see if it’s available and it is there as an audio book. I also searched my library’s catalog, they don’t have it but it is available at nearby libraries as a physical book. I think I’m more apt to get the audio version (narrated by Lin Manuel).

I wanna see it. And yes, Lin Manuel narrates the book and he's in the movie too.

  2. I watched the trailer a while back. I'm not really in to coming of age films, and that does seem to be what this is.

    1. I bet you did.
It's been in the making for several years. The pandemic and all that. And it's much more than a coming of age tale: it deals with themes of identity, ethnicity and masculinity. It deals with the way people communicate and trauma. it touches on the balance of intellect and physical strength and the idea that emotions are integral part of ourselves. Calling the book/movie a 'coming of age' story is slightly reductive...

    1. I thought so, too!
The book is based on is actually very good. The author also has a very interesting story. He said that writing the book actually helped him. Catharsis, I guess...

  4. I don't think I'm familiar with the books but from your writing here sounds like something I would like to read I'll have to look into it. The movie sounds like it would be very entertaining. The '70s and '80s always seems to be my most popular time frame of the gay lifestyle I'm not sure why. I can watch the movie Longtime Companion and just get chills.

Not too heavy, very good summer reading. And I love the 80's!!
I think the 80s speak to us because The Plague literally seared them in our minds. OMG Longtime Companion is part of my canon of great lgbtq movies!

Y el libro ha sido traducido a veinticinco idiomas! Lo más probable es que lo puedas encontrar. Lo recomiendo. Viene bien después de que Aris te ha tratado así! LOL

    1. It is!
It goes deeper than their relationship, of course. And yes, Lin-Manuel is a producer and I think he plays one of the parents. He also narrates the audio book, natch.
