Oh, Therapy...?

Here's the thing:

I think that reading/listening about couples therapy (or therapy in general) is a good exercise on self reflection. Whether we are or not part of a couple (or throuple, or poly formation or monogamish relationship or Ace variant or whatever it is that floats your sexy boat) knowing how to interact with others when there are feelings or sex involved it's always healthy. One never knows, right?

And developing emotional intelligence benefits us in our daily life interactions.

This lady here pulls no punches, though. Love that.

That's how I like it.

  1. Big says,
    1. Communication. 2. Communication. 3. Communication. 4. Don't sweat the small shit. Will it matter in two hours? Two days? Two months? No? Then keep your mouth shut and let that shit go. 5. Every once in a while, do something nice, some kindness, unexpectedly. Together 40 years, married 41 in September. that has been the key.

    1. Well, pretty much.
There's WORK due when we are in a relationship. It's not all shit and giggles.

  2. I've known several people who've been in therapy for all sorts of reasons, and I've yet to see one of them who has actually changed. In fact, I know one woman who's been made even worse.

    1. Because when you do therapy, you do it to grow.
It requires work to change harmful patterns, and some people are just not willing to change. You don't do therapy because it's fun, You do therapy to change harmful patterns.

    1. He's right.
This lady lays it all bare there, too. We need to be connected to our emotions and not be afraid to talk the talk and walk the walk.

  4. If couples aren't able to resolve issues by themselves in a healthy way, then couples counselling is always a good idea, I think. And the sooner the better before anger and resentment kills the positive basis for the relationship.

    1. Agree.
Sometimes things are way beyond our job description. And we get very shortsighted when it comes to feelings and the such. We need someone to helps us untangle ourselves.

  5. Love this take so much. Treating couples therapy (and therapy in general) as a kind of “relationship gym” for anyone—single, coupled, poly, ace, whatever—is such a smart, generous way to look at it, especially with how much it boosts self‑reflection and emotional intelligence. And yes, a therapist who doesn’t pull punches is worth their weight in gold; honest, direct insight is exactly what helps people show up better in all their connections, sexy or otherwise.

  6. It is!!
And there HAS to be self-reflection. People need to be aware that they need to change something about their patterns to be happier. A therapist is sometimes the best that can happen to us....
