Tiny

DWELL

I want to eventually own a small house. One or two bedrooms. I'd like a small house, bordering on tiny. Or at least small by American standards, where the 'average' home has become bigger and bigger since the fifties. I also want it to be eco-friendly. Yeah, I like looking at pretty (big) houses all over. I always leaf through Dwell and Architectural Design magazines . But I really would like something smaller. And my favorite are those container homes you see everywhere in those H&G and DIY tv programs and on youtube. I would be even willing to donate half of my clothes if I could get the house that I want. Because when you live in a small house, the first thing you lose is the superfluous. And I'd have to learn to live with things that are essential. I know, very Marie Kondo of me.

I think I will eventually want to learn to live with less 'things'. I wish I could be really a minimalist and let go of my hoarding ways. I hoard books and clothes and mementos. It may have to do with a life of being basically a nomad. After years of college, living in rented spaces and moving from one place to another does take its toll. I don't have a house stuffed with things I don't need, mind you, but I do tend to accumulate more than I need. I would not be able to move right now into, let's say, a smaller place without giving away half of the things I already have.We all know how hard it is to let go of our mementos.

We get used to plenty. It's the easiest thing to do. But I'd love to have a smaller carbon blueprint. I'd love to be able to learn to live with the essential and be able to be more centered and present. But why, you'd ask? Why submit myself to something like that when I COULD have things that would make my life easier? What I've learned is that 'having' does not really makes us all that happy. We all look at those houses on Architectural Digest (or the posts that Bob periodically has where he shows astounding homes) but I think I do it more for the aesthetic value they have than with an actual desire to live in them.

If I am to be on my own, I'd try one of these:

Or if I'm going to be a retiree by the time I get my own house, maybe this:

So yes. I imagine I'll become the old man in UP later in life. But living off the grid and enjoying nature, that now seem to be the furthest from who I am and what I do, may be in my future. I think it could be awesome.

XOXO

  1. I like the dwell model. if I were single, I could live in a tiny house. I don't have many things, since I have given much away. I currently live in a 1450 sq ft house, built in 1941. I would even take a studio apartment to age in place.

Hey, it’s called ‘style’. Just use a pretty filter and good editing.

  2. Being the “practical” person that I am, my rule of thumb has always been “nothing smaller than a 2 bedroom condo or a 3 bedroom single family home.” Anything smaller I think would be difficult to sell.

But I can see where these dwellings do have some appeal. We do have too much stuff. There are things in my house that I may not have given much thought to that I probably could do without. But I tend to be a pack rat and need to overcome that first.

    1. I know. The practical me thinks about a two bedroom but small houses seem so... pacific?

  3. I read an article about tiny homes. It said that those who own them usually last only a year or so actually living in them.

    1. Yeah, tiny homes seem to be somehow transitional, but I’d like a small blueprint home, not a tiny home, really. a tiny home seems a little too RV park for me.

  4. Our house is a large house, for just two people, but one thing we don't have is a lot of "things." If we have it, it's because we use it, because we love it, because it holds memories for us. I do like the idea of downsizing, and I love some of these tiny homes, but some are just too small.
We had about 1200 square feet in Miami, which was nice for us,and then went up over twice as much to the house we have now. And now I'm thinking of going back to 1200.
And liivng off the grid, though perhaps not remotely, would be ideal.
    We'll see

    1. Yes! Off the grid would be awesome. It sounds a little post apocalyptic but really, it would be nice.

  5. Those ones you have featured, I could easily live in and love them. I have never wanted a large home or mansion. Currently I live in a little bijou apartment....decorated nicely. Some friends say buy a house and larger. But I love and adore my place....so no. It warm, inviting and cozy.

    2. Absolutely! It’s like living in a condo with the advantages of a house! On and can you imagine one of these near the beach or a lake? Yes, please!

  6. I live in a small house (cottage). It is just under 900sf. I also have a seperate garage. I loved this house so much when my parents bought it (1967) that I built one identical to it in the country of North Carolina. Storage is the only issue.
The above example of the one on wheels would be a no for me. The rest are great!

    1. Oh, this is another house tour in the making! And I know about the houses on wheels. I’m a container home person myself.

  7. I have big dogs and a big house, 9' ceilings upstairs, 10' ceilings downstairs. It's paid for, so it's mine. I don't do well in a small environment.

    1. Another house tour! Woot! And I believe that people with (big) pets should have a house. The only pets for apartments are lap dogs and kitties. 😎
