I’ll show you mine. one
So let's start with where I usually sit to watch tv and listen to music. I spend a lot of time in this part of my space, especially now that we are sheltering in place. It's a collection of things that mean something to me and that I have accumulated through the years and that come from many different sources. This space came to be because one of my gurrlz gave me a (leather?) sofa and I built this 'room' around it. Remember this is not a conventional living space, so I defined the areas by their use. I imagine this would be the 'media room' or the 'tv room' in a conventional house. There's nothing conventional about it, of course. Starting with the two beer boxes that are supposed to be the table where I keep the remotes and some DVDs. Those belonged to my one friend's and I basically told him I needed them. I saw that same box in a thrift store in Milwaukee and as soon as this pandemic is under control I'm making a trip to see if I can get it. I'm silly like that.
I tend to cherish little things that have been given to me and place them around me to look at them. They remind me of moments and people in my life. Take for example that little glass flying pig and that bird. They were in an RV that I helped drive to Texas. They belonged to my one friend's mom and she gave them to me. I love them! The glass perfume bottle was another gift. I admired it and boom! It was mine. I've had it for like, ten years. The paperweight came from the Art Institute. I got it as a gift, too. I could not get over how pretty the paperweight collection at the AI was and have visited it several times. My friend, who collects paperweights gave this one to me for my Bday or Valentine's or Xmas. I cannot remember. It's very pretty and the heart is made up of tiny roses.
I like flowers but they're expensive and I have not bought any since the beginning of the year, so I decided a dried arrangement would be a good replacement. The candle was a gift, too (there's a tons of gifts in my place!). It's handmade and it smells delicious. The books were also gifts. One of my co-workers knew that I like Ann Rice and gave me hardcovers of several of her books. The woman in the photo is my mum. I know they took the pic when she was very young, but that's about it. I have no idea of how young. Also, that's one of the few pics I have of her. The frame was handmade by one of my exes, customized to fit that picture. Don't get fooled by the Buddha in the background. I am not that self-reflexive. I wish I were. It's a wood carving that was a gift from a friend, along with the embroidered little cloth on which it rests and the Tibetan little rug on which it sits. My friend is a Buddhist and bought that for me in one of his trips.
Same with these other figurines. One is Shiva, who I think it's one of those super cool deities with tons of charm and danger and this representation I think encapsulates what he really is. It was a gift from a friend. We saw an original, ten-inch tall Hindu sculpture of dancing Shiva once in the Cleveland museum and I had to go and read on Shiva right away. I am fascinated by him and I think he's cooler than Brahma or Vishnu. More dangerous, too. The bronze figurine on the right was another gift from an ex. He brought it from one of his trips toThailand and I treasure it. It's some sort of angel and it's very heavy. That Pickwick and Co. box has a candle inside. When I light it it perfumes the whole place. It was a birthday gift from many years ago. Ron, the guy who gave it to me had the most fascinating stories to tell. He grew up in Chicago and lived through the AIDS crisis of the late seventies and early eighties. He could tell the greatest stories about those times and knew all the cruising spots around the city. He passed away two years ago. Pancreatic cancer. And nowadays I seldom light that candle. I will keep it as long as I can. It reminds me of him and his stories.
As most of the artwork I have, these four came from different times in my life. The Body Double poster is from an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art. We got to meet some of the artists who were showing that day and we ended up doing the tour with one of the artists who created the guides. I should have asked them to sign it but I was too shy. I know. Who knew?
The two similar posters are from the New York Museum. We went to NY to meet my friend and his husband who were coming from Madrid and we spent a long weekend there. I got these prints by chance, because I was talking to a lady who was giving me directions to the Museum of Sex (as one does) and she turned out to be the museum store's manager. I told her I loved museums and she grabbed those two prints and gave them to me. The secret charm of being geeky.
Ah, the Obama poster. When Obama was running for president for the first time, I went to a talk offered by the Democrat student body at the University of Akron. They were talking about this senator from Illinois who was running for president and they were giving away this poster. I thought the message was super cool and that the poster was awesome. It was shelved for years and then I framed it and put it up. Now it's a conversation piece that brings memories of the good old times, when there was an adult in the White House.
Ha! My record collection. I told you that I got into vinyl and that I used to go crate digging a lot. I have not bought many this year, because I like to go to the record stores and choose and pick. Buying records online is boring. I also have seven inches, but they are in little containers. You can see some I have yet to categorize on the bottom. The turntable was in one of my friend's mom's basement for years and he found it and gave it to me. The sound system looks tiny but it can pack a punch. I basically stole it from a friend who had it in his closet collecting dust. When he comes over, I play Aerosmith for him full volume. It's crazy.
The artwork were gifts, too. The painting on the left is an oil on canvas and the artist is a Russian lady who lived in the Chicago suburbs. I love the colors and the man reminds me of someone that I used to know. The flowers are watercolor on paper and they were painted by one of my exe's aunt many years ago. I got to meet her and she signed it. The two pieces on the bottom were made by my Gurrl's nephew when he was in kindergarten. He gave them to me and I framed them. Just because.
Oh. These photos. I dated a boy many, many years ago while I was living in Pittsburgh and going to UPitt. He's one of the sweetest men I know, very talented and a whiz with computers. He turned out to take on photography and started taking photos of everything. Those photos are from the Phipp's Conservatory, I think. I told him I loved orchids and roses and I guess he remembered it. Those were some of the first photos he took with one of his new cameras and he sent them to me. I printed them and hung them up on my wall. I have moved several times but they always stay with me. They cheer me up. The chairs were thrifted and I got them for $15. There's porn in that carton box and those are Stephen King novels that I've been trying to finish since last summer.
And that's the tour. I think I feel a little exposed but I also think that now you know that I like things other than handsome naked men. Hope you enjoyed it...
XOXO
Looks like a beautiful place. 👌🏻 Thanks for sharing the photos so we can see where you spend most of your days! 💛 Love the painting as well. 😉
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yes, been spending tons of time here with this sheltering in place. And isn't hat painting cool? That man is so... mysterious?
DeleteXOXO
Babe, you’ve done a wonderful job decorating. And the space is perfect for you. It’s what it should be-someplace that makes you happy and comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI love the art and how you’ve grouped them. Now about your obsession with vinyl...it’s a good thing your in the basement. Those things are HEAVY! 😜
XOXO 👨❤️💋👨
Thanks, bae. And yes, it does make me happy. And who's obsessed with vinyl? LOL
DeleteAnd yes, they are heavy! They're old fashioned metal milk crates.
XOXO
I have been thinking about doing a little tour of my nest, maybe sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteDo it!
DeleteIt was so much fun to do this.
XOXO
Nice. I love the eclectic artwork, and the vinyl, and the tchochkis. We're the same way in that the things we have all have a meaning and a story to them.
ReplyDeleteI, too, have some religious icons that I only keep because of their beauty and the sense of art to them.
Lastly, your Mum looks gorgeous. Great photo!
Oh, the tchochkis! I never realized I had so much shit spread all over until I started talking about it! LOL
DeleteI like the beauty religion has produced. The people who practice it? Much less so. And thanks! I wish I had more photos of my mom when she was young.
XOXO
what a cozy, welcoming, warm, comfortable, happy space! I envy your obama poster. thank you for showing off a part of yourself.
ReplyDeleteAwww thanks Anne Marie! So glad I could share this with you guys.
DeleteIt IS my happy space. And I love that Obama poster, both its aesthetics and what it means. A historic presidency.
XOXO
Thanks for the tour! It's interesting and shows us a lot about you, as you say. And that's one hell of a record collection.
ReplyDeleteOh, you're more than welcome!
DeleteYou guys who read the blog already know how I think, so I thought, what the hell. It was like having you over!
And you have not seen my true addiction: those 45 RPM that had picture covers! LOL
XOXO
What a great place. Thanks for the tour! That's a great vinyl collection. I love it! And the artwork, too. I have a wall of LeRoy Neiman's in the dining room - only one is signed. But there is original artwork spread all over the house. Another thing we have in common. Plus: Rice (yes, please! "Blackwood Farm" is still my all-time favorite) and King. His latest of 4 novellas is terrific - particularly the final one called "Rat" about a struggling writer. The more I learn about you, the more I find we have in common. xoxo
ReplyDeleteI agree Pat! Sixpense was a wonderful discovery to come across last year! Don't get mushy now...….
DeleteThanks, Big! It was my pleasure!
DeleteI love my vinyl. Really. I never thought I'd enjoyed it so much when I started collecting them. And I think having artwork that means something to us is really important. After all, we're looking at it on the daily. And I love The Vampire Chronicles! King has been mandatory reading since forever. I usually read in bed, so I have scared myself to sleep more than once.
And you know what they say of bird of a feather... LOL
XOXO
P.S. Thanks, Maddie! *smooches*
I love it!!!!!! And it's what a pictured can you believe it!!!!! My observations.
ReplyDelete1- Nice to see you put the lube bottle away.
2- When you hook up on that sofa does your mothers picture get laid down?
3- I love seeing the Brian Simms magazine cover. I can spy that man from 2 miles away.
4-Picwick and 7 co always make incredible bath soaps too.
4- I have one of those posable wood dollies figures too!
5-LOVE THE ART!
6- Buster has a sock monkey too, but wants your larger one!
7-I love that you have a wet bar in there!!!!
8- LOVE the records and turntable. I'm sick we don't live closer as my mother , brace yourself, let a garbage collector take her record collection!!!!!!!!!!! I would have given it to you. I know she had some folk, lots of jazz, and a ton of that retro groove sounding lounge music. I. was. SICK!!!!
I can totally see being there, having conversation, with a drink or 6 with you, listening to music , hanging. Very nice Sixpense!!!!
Nooooooo! *slowly slides down the wall* and I would have LOVED to have your mom's record collection!
DeleteAnd yes, the lube bottle is in a little box next to the bed. That sofa HAS indeed seen some action (that's why mom's facing forward). And that IS Mr. Simms! LOL. I love that Pickwick candle! I'll have to try their soaps. OMG I have one more of those posable figures! Love them. I'm flattered you like the artwork! I think you have awesome taste. Buster and I have sock monkeys! Yay!
And yes, that's a wet bar because *whispers* I like wine. But because I'm a wuss, I only like sweet wines. *wispers*.
I would absolutely love to have you over, listen to Nina Simone, have some dranks and cackle about the fucked up state of the world.
XOXO
OH NOOOO!!! A garbage collector??? ......... Sorry, I fainted there for a minute. No, no, no, no.. Music must never be discarded.
DeleteBut don't you two dare get together for music and hanging out and conversation without me! XOXO for you both!
Hahaha
DeleteOhh seriously, getting together for music and hanging out with the readers of this blog would be amazeballs!
XOXO
I love homes where every thing in it has a story or memory attached to it! Your media room is beautifully arranged. I especially like how you have grouped and hung your pictures. It's a very inviting space. And your discreet cardboard banker's box o' porn, LOL!
ReplyDeleteSame! Everything I have comes from someone I love, someplace I've been or has a story. And thank you! I actually grouped those pics almost by instinct I had no idea what I was going to put on the walls until I started hanging them. And yes, the porn needs to go in a nondescript box so my friends don't dive right into it.
DeleteBTW, I was inspired by your post on that chair your mom used to have when I was writing this one.
XOXO
Where's the bong? ...beer cans??? Does anyone actually live here???? Future A.D. layout??????? Jeez I feel like a slob. Thank gawd you don't live next door!
ReplyDeleteHahahaha. The bong is hidden with the porn. And I don't drink beer, Jimmy. I'm not a frat boy (even though I've had plenty of those). LOL
DeleteIf I lived next door, we'd spend whole afternoons gossiping about Antonio Biaggi and drinking wine, Jimmy!
XOXO
Eclectic , comfortable, cosy, trendy
ReplyDeleteI love it
Aww. Thanks, Dearheart.
DeleteI truly love your place, too! Especially your garden and your artwork!
XOXO
Very, very nice. All the things that make you feel comfortable and at ease. I really like the painting with the guy in the T-shirt. That shirt just steals your eye.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Dave. And yes, I believe we need to surround ourselves with things that make us feel good. And that painting is super cool! I think the artist had her brother, who had just come from Russia, sit for her for that painting. The stark contrast of that white wife beater with the colors around it really is something.
DeleteXOXO
I enjoyed the tour very much and I feel like I got to know you a little bit more. You definitely have a cool space and I think you have done an excellent job of surrounding yourself with lots of memories.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mr. Shife! Glad to have had you over! Even if it's virtually.
DeleteI think all those memories have made this quarantine time much more bearable.
XOXO
